About

Brandon Pekarek

San Francisco Bay Area

I am a scientist with a PhD in Neuroscience & Genetics and a deep love of learning. Professionally, I have built a track record of independent discovery, tool development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration spanning drug development, gene editing, and neural circuit mapping. When not thinking about science, I enjoy building computers and networking gear, aquarium design, and coffee.

Professional Experience

Metagenomi - Scientist II, CNS Gene Editing

Emeryville, CA

  • Led ALS treatment project using ATXN2 gene knockout in the CNS
  • Built stereotactic delivery systems for AAV and LNP to the CNS
  • Implemented biodistribution assays using tissue clearing and light-sheet microscopy
  • Speaker at UC Berkeley's 22nd Annual Advanced Imaging Methods Conference
  • Innovated multiple US patents for engineered-nuclease delivery

Baylor College of Medicine

Houston, TX

Postdoctoral Fellow: Designed high-throughput spatial transcriptomic methods and built analysis pipelines for single-cell sequencing data.

Graduate Researcher: Investigated oxytocin's role in adult-born neuron circuit integration using conditional viral genetics, stereotactic brain injections, confocal/two-photon imaging, electrophysiology, and RNA-sequencing.
